It is prescribed for a number of conditions including Candida infections, dermatophyte infections, and yeast infections. However, diflucan can also cause side effects including headaches, nausea, and diarrhea. In this study, we evaluated the adverse effects of diflucan use in adults with candidiasis and yeast infections.
A total of 16 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study and received a single 100 mg oral dose of diflucan (Sigma Chemical Company, St Louis, MO, USA). The study was terminated by discontinuation of the study medication, and the study continued. A medical records review was conducted to identify patients who received diflucan and were subsequently enrolled in the study. Of the 17 subjects who met the criteria, 12 were female and 9 were male. The mean age of the subjects was 37.3 years (range, 18–70 years). The mean duration of candidiasis was 2.5 years (range, 1.5–4.3). Of the 16 subjects who completed the study, 11 (64.7%) were prescribed diflucan for candidiasis. Of these 11 subjects, 12 (64.7%) experienced a single episode of candidiasis and had a duration of 2.5 years (range, 1.5–4.3) with no serious adverse events. There were no reports of any adverse events in the subjects. Of the 11 subjects with candidiasis, 12 (64.7%) received oral diflucan, whereas none of the 14 (66.4%) subjects were administered diflucan.
During the study, the patients were followed for an average of 3.8 months. The primary endpoint of this study was the proportion of patients who experienced a single episode of candidiasis and a duration of 2.5 years (mean ± standard deviation [SD]) for each individual. There were no significant differences between the groups in the rate of discontinuation of diflucan (P=0.89). The proportion of subjects who discontinued from the study medication was 5.3% (P=0.68), of the subjects who discontinued had no adverse events (P=0.29). The mean number of subjects who discontinued was 4.8 (P=0.02) and the mean duration of candidiasis was 2.5 (range, 1.5–4.3). No adverse events were reported in the subjects with yeast infections.
